UBC Sauder proudly unveiled a new art piece entitled “Cultural Guardians” by xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) artist Susan Point.
Installed in UBC’s Henry Angus CPA Hall, the Cultural Guardians will reside in the heart of UBC’s Vancouver campus, located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam, and will serve as a reminder of Sauder’s ongoing efforts to advance reconciliation.
In a Sauder interview, Point said she’s “very proud” of the piece.
She said she incorporated faces into it to represent people of different cultures at the university, and specifically used a weave design to “represent the weaving of the cultures” at UBC.
She said the piece serves “to protect all of the cultures within this university.”
She indicated the project will “probably… be my last large scale public art piece because I’m not getting any younger.”
Watch Susan Point and other members of the Musqueam and UBC Sauder communities discuss the significance of Cultural Guardians.
